This month sees the launch of our new kit, and to celebrate this we are giving away the first shirts to 5 people who can make us laugh, cry, cringe and celebrate the beautiful game.
All you have to do is tell us about your football exploits oversees. We want to hear real stories about the world's greatest sport. The best will be put on the website. Send in your stories to competition@globalwanderers.co.uk. By July 25th We will be running a different competition each month
with some great prizes lined up.
Here are some of our tales from Global Wanderers hq:
John - "I was on a nice relaxing beach holiday to St Lucia a few years ago. The days were spent sipping cocktails by the pool and eating vast quantities of seafood. On the final day, one of the local games organisers at the complex arranged a game between some British guests and the St Lucian workers. Everyone else was taking it nice and easy but my competitive spirit took over and I was dominating the middle of the park. After about ten minutes, I went in for a 50-50 (well, more of a 30-70 I guess) and the tackle broke my foot and a bone in my opponents foot. It still affects me to this day, fortunately the other guy was ok I heard. I guess that's the price you pay for pretending to be Roy Keane when you are 50 and your pre match preparation has been equal part shrimp and sleep."
Phil - "I have coached football for a while now, and a few years ago I was travelling around Sri Lanka. One evening I was stuck on a bus on the east side of the island and realised I would have to spend the night in a small town with absolutely no facilities for travellers. One of the locals on the bus saw my plight and came to help me, finding me a place to stay and eat etc. We got chatting and he asked my profession, to which I said I am an English soccer coach. I think he thought I was the England soccer coach as his eyes lit up, and he rushed me to a local dignitary. Still slightly bemused by what was happening, the dignitary starting taking photos of me and making me write in a very impressive book. Other entries in this were from the UN peacekeeping envoy and leading Sri Lankan politicians and celebrities. If ever you are in Akkaraipattu, check it out!!"
Rob - "We had been in Singapore for 4 days and were ready to move on, there are only so many times you can look round a shopping mall, when we spotted a small poster advertising a game of football. We had not played during our 3 months on the road and were itching for a game so decided to stay. We spend 6 days broke and bored waiting for the match only to turn up at the park and find it was a youth club kick about. We really showed those 13 year olds how to play and I managed to score twice in a 13-8 win. Happy days."
