The Football
We are based up in the club's main training camp in Wayanad. We get into the sessions early doors and by day four we will have had three sessions and be ready for our first game, an evening game in Arepatta against Wayanad United. The sessions will be designed to get the team organised at the back, and creating chances through patterns of play going forward. After a couple of days by the beach to reflect on the first game and prepare for the next one, we will play in the Corporation Stadium in Calicut against the mighty Universal Soccer for the Anglo Indian Cup, all this in just a one week trip.
The Opposition
Game 1 - Wayanad United. A real production line of talent, Wayanad United bring through star players year after year, many of whom graduate to the mega clubs in India in Bengal, Cochin and Mumbai. They are a very fluid team, 4-4-2 formation but every one of them is comfortable on the ball. Be careful of Shafik, a natural goalscorer if ever there was one. Plays part of the year in Mumbai and was the only player to score against AC Milan's junior team in their recent tour of India.
Game 2 - Universal Soccer. One of the giants of North Keralan football, they bounced back in style last season to the premier league, winning every game and winning the cup final 5-0. Their star player is Prasoon, player of the year last season and scored an incredible three hatricks in three games. They play a strict 4-4-2 formation but watch out for their strikers dropping off a lot and late runs from midfield.
The Training Faciliites
Our main training complex is in the hill country in Wayanad, this is in north eastern Kerala. The pitch is like a carpet and it is set within tea plantations.
The Trip
One week crammed full of football and adventure. Train by the tea plantations, play in a farming village then play for the cup at a 50,000 seater stadium. When not playing football, trek in the hills and relax on the beach.
A real diversity in a short trip. In Wayanad, there is excellent trekking which can be arranged on the trip as well as Ayurvedic massages. There are also lots of day trips to freshwater lakes and waterfalls as well as tours to the tea plantations. After this, in Kappad Beach there are the usual beach activities - swimming in the pool or ocean, beach cricket and football etc, but here you can also cruise on a houseboat on the northern backwaters or explore the untouched Malabar coast.
For all the beach lovers, Kappad will not disappoint. Besides topping up the tan, there are miles of untouched beaches to explore as well as beach footy and cricket to be played as well as swimming in either the ocean or the pool.
The Accommodation
In Calicut, we stay in a comfortable 3* hotel in the city centre, then in Wayanard and Kappad Beach, we stay in resorts which have pools and fitness rooms.
Day 1 | Calicut
Arrival day, pick up free transfer to the hotel in Calicut. Team meeting in the evening to discuss the upcoming week. Check out the busy beach where at any one time, a multitude of football matches are going on and check out the delicious food at the stalls.
Day 2-4 | Wayanad
Three days to gel the team. We have sessions every day at our ground here and our coach will be working overtime to make sure the team are ready for the challenges that await. On the last evening here, we play Wayanad United at their fortress in Arepatta. Under the lights and in front of a passionate crowd, this is a great way to end our stay in the hill country.
Day 5-6 | Kappad Beach
Time to reflect on the last game and then prepare for the next one. A couple of days by this unspoilt beach, relax or go exploring up the coast.
Day 7-8 | Calicut
Back to football city, arrive on the team bus in time for the big game. The 50,000 Corporation Stadium hosts us against the mighty Universal Soccer and a big crowd and media attention awaits. Have drinks with the opposition after the game by Arabian Ocean and hopefully celebrate winning the cup. The final day is departure day and time for some last minute shopping.
